Kids’ Books About Books and Reading

Books about books and reading

Author Niel Gailman said it best, “A book is a dream that you hold in your hand.” It’s true, open a book and it can take you on a journey and give you hope, courage, empathy, compassion, friendship, giggles and so much more. In honor of children’s books and my love of reading, I’ve put together a list of books (both new hits and oldies but goodies) about books that are sure to inspire a love of reading in kids.

Calvin Can’t Fly: The Story of a Bookworm Birdie

Calvin is a birdie unlike any other. While his brothers and sisters discover all the things birds hold dear (like worms!), Calvin discovers books. Other birds call him names like “geeky beaky,” but Calvin keeps his beak in a book and pays them no mind. Then the day comes to migrate and Calvin realizes he can’t fly! His siblings help him glide through the air but in the end, a hurricane whips up and Calvin saves the day by knowing just what to do. How does he know what to do, you ask? Because he read all about it in a book, of course. I love that Calvin knows who he is and stays true to himself to the very end.

I Will Not Read This Book

In this humorous tale, a little boy is planning to never, ever read his book. He doesn’t care what you do to him either. You can hang him upside down by one toe, over a cliff, with sharks swimming below, but you can’t make him read the book. It turns out he is willing to read his book if he has someone special to share it with. A fun book for the ultimate reluctant reader.

A New Book For Jack

Jack is having a hard time getting up the courage to give a book report in front of his class. Since he is a book lover, he is sure there must be a book out there somewhere that will help him overcome his worries and gain confidence. He searches high and low and finally, he finds a book about David and the King’s Army. Surely, David had to be brave to slay a giant and become a king! In his search for the perfect book, Jack finds he has many caring people in his life to help guide him through his troubles. A lovely, inspirational book about books with a spiritual thread.

Doris The Bookasaurus

Doris is book obsessed and I am totally with her! When she goes to the library with her mother, she fills a wagon to the top. Her mother says, “Got enough there, Doris? Goodness, you’re a Bookasauras!” At which Doris replies, “Yes, I always need some more.  Hooray for books! They make me ROAR!” Doris’ brothers would rather she play with them… that is until Doris shares her pirate book and an adventure begins. This is a darling book and the rhyming text makes it fun to read out loud during story time or anytime.

Mother Goose’s Pajama Party

Mother Goose's PJ Party cover

“Star light, star bright, come to story time tonight. Bring your friends and don’t be late. Meet at my house—half past eight.” What happens when Mother Goose invites her own characters to story time? They have a magical slumber party! Wear your jammies and join the fun. Mother Goose’s original nursery rhymes are included in the back of the book.

Lola at the Library

This is an oldie but a goodie and a classic in my book. Every week, Lola and her mommy go to the library where she meets friends, listens to stories, and gets to take home all the books she wants! This book (the first in a series of Lola Books) encourages little ones to read and prepares them for a visit to their own library.
